Tak terasa Linux Ubuntu sudah memasuki versi 9.04. Paket kiriman yang berisi sebuah CD Linux Ubuntu 9.04 (the Jaunty Jackalope) yang saya pesan sekitar 2 minggu lalu sudah saya terima hari ini. Sangat menyenangkan bisa mengenal Linux Ubuntu karena selain gratis, kita dapat menikmati sebuah sistem operasi open source yang kinerjanya sangat baik. Saat saya coba jalankan CD Linux Ubuntu 9.04 pada notebook saya, semuanya berjalan lancar. Terlihat bahwa dari segi tampilan, Linux Ubuntu ini masih serupa dengan versi-versi sebelumnya, yaitu versi 7.10 dan versi 8.04. Namun, untuk fasilitas-fasilitas lain saya belum tahu pasti. Mungkin saya harus melihat-lihatnya secara lebih jauh.

Yang jelas, untuk program aplikasi OpenOffice.org sudah digunakan versi 3. Sebagai informasi bagi yang belum pernah menjamah sistem operasi Linux, OpenOffice.org adalah sebuah program aplikasi yang fungsinya serupa dengan Microsoft Office yang berjalan pada sistem operasi Microsoft Windows.

Dua tahun lebih saya sudah terjun di dunia blog dan kegiatan ini semakin membuat saya merasa asyik. Satu hari saja tidak melihat-lihat blog terasa ada sesuatu yang hilang. Beberapa blog telah saya buat dengan tema yang berbeda-beda.

Blog Catatan Henson ini adalah blog pertama saya. Berbeda dengan beberapa blogger lain yang suka gonta-ganti template, saya cenderung mempertahankan template blog ini. Setelah sukses dengan blog kedua saya, yaitu Let's Learn English, yang memfokuskan pada pelajaran bahasa Inggris, mulai bulan lalu saya telah membuat blog baru yang memfokuskan pada pelajaran bahasa Jerman. Blog ini bernama Wir Lernen Deutsch, yang merupakan blog saya yang kesepuluh. Melalui blog ini saya mencoba untuk berbagi pengetahuan bahasa, khususnya dalam bidang bahasa Jerman. Saya bukanlah ahli atau jago bahasa Jerman. Sama sekali bukan! Saya cuma mau menuliskan sedikit pengetahuan saya dalam blog agar bisa menjadi dokumen online yang bisa saya akses kapanpun saya mau, syukur-syukur kalau apa yang saya tuliskan tersebut bisa juga bermanfaat bagi orang lain, khususnya mereka yang berminat belajar bahasa Jerman.

Buku Troubleshooting Komputer Cetakan Kelima

Kembali saya menerima kabar gembira dari PT. Pustaka Pembangunan Swadaya Nusantara atau yang lebih dikenal dengan nama Penerbit Puspa Swara Jakarta bahwa buku saya yang berjudul Troubleshooting Komputer telah dicetak ulang untuk kelima kalinya. Sungguh suatu kebahagiaan bagi seorang penulis buku saat buku-bukunya bisa dicetak ulang untuk yang kesekian kalinya karena hal itu menandakan bukunya dapat diterima secara antusias oleh masyarakat. Dalam dunia penerbitan buku, banyak kasus terjadi bahwa sebuah buku gagal menembus pasar sehingga buku tersebut hanya mentok pada cetakan pertama.

Pada cetakan kelima ini, masih belum ada perubahan dalam hal isi dan harga buku (Rp20.900,00). Sebenarnya sejak cetakan kedua, saya telah mengajukan revisi berupa penambahan lebih dari 20 bab baru agar isi buku menjadi lebih lengkap. Tapi nampaknya hingga sekarang pihak penerbit masih belum mau merealisasikannya karena alasan pemasaran. Ketika saya pergi ke toko buku, saya sering melihat buku ini terpajang di rak Toko Buku Karisma dan Toko Buku Gramedia, yang merupakan dua toko buku besar di Indonesia.

Kartu Kredit dengan Chip EMV

Kemarin saya menerima beberapa surat. Di antara surat-surat tersebut ada satu yang membuat saya merasa penasaran atau ingin tahu sehingga saya buru-buru membukanya. Sebuah amplop berwarna biru yang berasal dari pengelola kartu kredit Mandiri. Ketika saya buka amplop tersebut, ada sebuah kartu kredit di dalamnya. Saya merasa agak bingung karena saya tidak mengajukan aplikasi kartu kredit baru. Setelah saya cek lebih lanjut, ternyata kartu kredit itu adalah untuk menggantikan kartu kredit yang saya pegang selama ini.

Mengapa diganti dengan yang baru? Ternyata kartu kredit yang baru menggunakan teknologi chip untuk keamanan dan kenyamanan dalam bertransaksi. Chip ini dapat dilihat pada bagian kiri kartu kredit. Bank Indonesia sebagai regulator sistem pembayaran di Indonesia telah mendorong seluruh bank penerbit kartu kredit untuk menerapkan teknologi berbasis integrated circuit atau chip dengan standar EMV (Europay MasterCard Visa). Teknologi chip ini dapat mengurangi risiko penyalahgunaan data seperti pada kartu magnetik. Seperti kita ketahui, kartu kredit cukup rawan sebagai target kejahatan. Modusnya antara lain adalah dengan melakukan pencurian data yang ada di dalam magnetik kartu yang asli untuk dipindahkan ke dalam magnetik kartu yang palsu.

Akhirnya Berhasil Mencairkan Pembayaran AdSense di Western Union

Setelah beberapa hari yang lalu gagal mencairkan pembayaran Google AdSense di agen Western Union yang terdapat di Bank Mandiri Cabang Palembang RSMH karena petugasnya tidak berada di tempat, kemarin siang saya mencoba ke Kantor Pos Pusat Palembang yang berlokasi di Jalan Merdeka, dekat dengan Bundaran Air Mancur, Masjid Agung, Jembatan Ampera dan Monumen Perjuangan Rakyat.

Seperti biasa, kantor pos ini selalu dipadati pengunjung yang memiliki kepentingannya sendiri. Ternyata agen Western Union ada di kantor pos ini. Saya diminta masuk ke bagian dalam karena ada tempat tersendiri untuk melakukan pengiriman dan penerimaan uang melalui Western Union. Petugasnya meminta fotokopi KTP saya, MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number), data pengirim uang (dalam hal ini pihak Google Inc.), dan tentu saja jumlah uang yang saya terima dari Google, yaitu sebesar $239,16. Pengurusannya tidak ada masalah sama sekali. Semuanya berjalan cepat. Tidak lebih dari 10 menit saya sudah bisa langsung menerima uangnya yang sudah dirupiahkan dengan kurs Rp11.681,60 per dolarnya. Tanpa potongan!

Wah… saya pikir enak juga sistem penerimaan pembayaran AdSense dengan cara ini dibandingkan dengan sistem cek yang memakan waktu yang lama dan potongan yang begitu besar.

Gagal Mencairkan Uang di Western Union

Setelah dikeluarkannya pembayaran Google AdSense melalui Western Union pada akhir Februari lalu, Kamis pagi 5 Maret 2009 pukul 09.45 saya pergi ke agen Western Union yang terdapat di Bank Mandiri Cabang Palembang RSMH. Syarat-syarat pencairan berupa KTP dan MTCN (Money Transfer Control Number) telah saya siapkan.

Seperti biasa, ketika memasuki pintu Bank Mandiri, petugas keamanan membukakan pintu dan menyapa dengan senyuman ramah,”Selamat pagi, Pak. Ada yang bisa saya bantu?” Saya membalasnya dengan senyuman juga,”Saya mau ke CS (Customer Service), Pak.” Petugas keamanan itu lalu mengambilkan nomor antrian saya dan mempersilahkan saya untuk menunggu giliran.

Setelah sekitar 15 menit menunggu, tibalah giliran saya. Petugas Customer Service juga menyapa saya dengan ramah.

CS : Selamat pagi. Apa yang bisa kami bantu, Pak?

Saya : Begini… Saya lihat di situ ada logo Western Union. Berarti di sini bisa melakukan penerimaan dan pembayaran uang.

CS : Iya Pak, bisa. Tapi…. (Petugas CS tersebut kelihatan agak bingung.)

Saya : Kenapa???

CS : Petugasnya sedang tidak ada.

Saya : Lho kok bisa gitu. Seharusnya petugas itu selalu standby. Kalau tidak ada, harusnya ada yang menggantikannya untuk sementara.

CS : Maaf sekali, Pak. Tadi ia izin pulang karena ada urusan keluarga. Mungkin Bapak bisa ke agen Western Union lain.

Saya merasa kecewa sekali. Tapi mungkin karena melihat mimik wajah saya yang menyiratkan kekecewaan yang mendalam, CS berkata lagi.

CS : Maaf Pak... Bapak tunggu sebentar ya.

Saya : Oke.

CS itu menuju ke pojok ruangan. Saya menunggu beberapa menit. Ia mengeluarkan HP-nya dan sepertinya sedang menghubungi seseorang. Saya tidak tahu apa yang dibicarakan. Setelah itu ia kembali ke hadapan saya.

CS : Begini Pak, petugasnya baru bisa datang sekitar pukul 12.00 nanti.

Saya : (Saya lihat ke arah jam tangan saya.) Sekarang baru pukul 10.00, Mbak. Lama sekali nunggunya. Saya masih ada kerjaan lain.

CS : Maaf sekali, Pak sudah merepotkan Bapak.

Saya : Ya sudahlah kalau begitu lain kali saja.

CS : Sekali lagi kami mohon maaf, Pak.

Saya : Oke, ga apa-apa.

Akhirnya saya langsung cabut dari bank itu dan sampai sekarang Western Union Quick Cash dari Google belum juga saya cairkan. Masih males. Sebenarnya di Kota Palembang terdapat banyak agen Western Union, tapi yang paling dekat adalah yang berada di Bank Mandiri itu.

Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome atau DSPS adalah sejenis insomnia permulaan tidur, kelainan tidur yang lazim dimana manusia tertidur pada saat larut malam dan kesulitan terjaga pada pagi hari untuk bekerja atau pergi ke sekolah. Para peneliti yakin bahwa sindrom ini adalah kelainan jam biologis tubuh. Dengan kata lain, jam internal tubuh tidak bertepatan dengan jam tidur yang diinginkan oleh orang itu. Jam berapa pun ia pergi tidur, seseorang yang menderita DSPS tidak akan tertidur hingga lewat tengah malam. Berbeda dari sebagian besar penderita insomnia, jam tidurnya cukup konsisten.

Jika para penderita DSPS tidak menderita kelainan tidur lain, mereka cenderung tidur nyenyak. Masalahnya terletak pada lingkungan tempat tinggal mereka dan ketidakmampuan mereka untuk tidur saat tubuh mereka membutuhkannya.

Padanan kata masyarakat di dalam bahasa Inggris adalah community. Makna kata itu berkaitan dengan adat-istiadat dan budaya yang sama, seperti dalam ungkapan masyarakat desa, yaitu kelompok sosial yang terikat oleh kesamaan tatanan dan tradisi serta pola hidup yang berlaku di lingkungan pedesaan.

Proses Penerbitan dan Pembayaran

Nah, bagian ini mungkin yang sangat ditunggu-tunggu oleh para penulis. Setelah naskah buku diajukan ke penerbit dan penerbit menyetujui naskah tersebut akan diterbitkan, penulis buku akan dikirimi Surat Perjanjian Penerbitan Buku yang berisi pasal-pasal yang berhubungan dengan penerbitan buku, misalnya masalah hak cipta, editing naskah, proses pencetakan buku, cetak ulang, dan masalah pembayaran.

Proses penerbitan buku meliputi kegiatan editing naskah, pembuatan cover buku, proofreading, pencetakan buku, dll. Semua proses ini memakan waktu yang berbeda-beda, tergantung jenis buku yang akan diterbitkan dan juga tergantung penerbit itu sendiri. Jika penulis menyetujui penawaran dari penerbit, buku tersebut akan diterbitkan dan penulis langsung memperoleh bayaran. Namun, penulis tidak mempunyai hak lagi atas buku itu. Artinya, jika buku itu laris di pasaran dan dicetak ulang, penulis tidak akan mendapatkan apa-apa.

Apakah menjadi penulis itu harus punya bakat? Tidak juga. Kalau punya bakat menulis, proses tulis-menulis akan menjadi lebih lancar. Tapi itu tidaklah berarti bahwa profesi penulis tertutup bagi mereka yang tidak mempunyai bakat. Kemampuan di bidang tulis-menulis bisa dipelajari dan dikembangkan selama kita memiliki kemauan yang keras, tekun, dan mau berlatih tanpa kenal lelah.

Terus terang, pada awal terjun di dunia tulis-menulis pada 1993, saya tidak memiliki bakat menulis. Saya sering merasa kesulitan dalam mengungkapkan gagasan-gagasan atau pikiran-pikiran saya. Namun, saya terus berusaha belajar, membaca berbagai buku, membaca dan mengamati tulisan-tulisan para penulis lain, serta berlatih menulis. Akhirnya, saya pun berhasil mewujudkan keinginan saya untuk menjadi seorang penulis. Selama tahun 1993-2000 artikel, puisi dan cerpen saya berhasil dimuat di beberapa majalah dan surat kabar di Indonesia. Namun, sejak tahun 2000, saya merasa jenuh dan mulai berpikir untuk mencapai yang lebih tinggi lagi, yaitu menjadi penulis buku. Bisakah?

Ternyata, dengan kerja keras, cita-cita untuk menjadi seorang penulis buku pun tercapai (Untuk cerita yang lebih lengkap, silahkan baca artikel perdana saya di blog ini) Tahun 2002 buku pertama saya berhasil diterbitkan oleh sebuah penerbit di Solo. Hinggi kini (2008) sudah tujuh buku yang diterbitkan. Buku-buku tersebut diterbitkan oleh penerbit-penerbit di Jakarta, Bandung, Malang, dan Surabaya. Mudah-mudahan karya-karya selanjutnya akan segera menyusul. Betapa bahagianya saat menemukan buku-buku saya terpajang di toko-toko buku terkenal.

Sudah dua minggu lebih saya tidak nge-blog. Banyak kunjungan dan pesan-pesan dari para sobat blogger lain yang belum saya balas. Saya ucapkan maaf yang sebesar-besarnya kepada sobat blogger. Ketujuh blog saya tertinggal begitu saja (terbengkalai) tanpa adanya posting baru.

Perlu sobat ketahui, saya sekarang diopname di Rumah Sakit Muhammad Husin Palembang. Hari ini sudah memasuki hari yang ke-16. Hari-hari yang berat harus saya lalui demi kesembuhan. Saya menjalani operasi tulang belakang karena selama ini saya mengalami kesulitan berjalan. Sebelum opname, saya telah menjalani beberapa pemeriksaan, yaitu pemeriksaan rontgen, CT Scan, hingga MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging). Dari hasil pemeriksaan tersebut, dokter ahli bedah ortopedi melihat adanya syaraf yang terjepit dan ia menyarankan agar saya menjalani operasi. Menurutnya, masih ada harapan untuk sembuh dan bisa berjalan lagi.

Bagian yang dioperasi

Masa-masa sulit pascaoperasi saya lalui dengan tekad untuk sembuh. Tapi apa yang terjadi??? Setelah operasi kondisi saya bukannya membaik, tetapi justru menjadi lebih buruk. Kedua kaki saya yang sebelum operasi masih bisa merasakan sentuhan kini justru menjadi mati rasa. Saya tidak tahu pasti sampai kapan hal ini akan terjadi. Pengorbanan berupa usaha, tenaga, dan finansial nampaknya belum membuahkan hasil. Biaya medis yang begitu tinggi turut mempersulit kondisi saya. Kebetulan saudara saya ada yang tinggal di Magelang, tepatnya di kompleks perumahan tentara tak jauh dari lokasi Akademi Militer. Udaranya begitu dingin karena daerah ini dikelilingi oleh beberapa gunung. Ketika berjalan-jalan keliling kompleks, saya sempat memotret pemandangan gunung dengan kamera HP saya. Pemandangan begitu indah walaupun gunung tidak tampak jelas karena diselimuti oleh kabut sore.

Magelang berada di wilayah Provinsi Jawa Tengah dan posisinya terletak di perbatasan Jawa Tengah dengan Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Di dunia pendidikan, kota ini sangat terkenal dengan Akademi Militer-nya yang telah melahirkan para perwira tangguh. Selain itu terdapat juga sekolah yang sangat terkenal yaitu SMA Taruna Nusantara.

Selain menikmati pemandangan yang indah, saya beserta keluarga juga sempat mengunjungi tempat wisata Kyai Langgeng yang sangat indah dan terkenal. Pengunjung begitu ramai karena hari itu adalah hari libur nasional (30 Juli 2008). Setelah puas menikmati suasana tempat wisata tersebut, kami pun pulang. Sore harinya kami kembali ke Yogyakarta.

Perjalanan ke Yogya

Selasa 22 Juli 2008 pukul 14.15 pesawat Lion Air membawa saya beserta para penumpang lainnya ke Jakarta. Tujuan perjalanan saya adalah Yogya. Namun, saya harus transit terlebih dahulu di Jakarta. Perjalanan dari Palembang ke Jakarta ditempuh dalam waktu 50 menit. Selama masa transit di Jakarta, saya memanfaatkan waktu untuk menelpon saudara-saudara dan teman saya. Lalu saya menyalakan laptop, mencoba mencari hotspot untuk sekadar melihat-lihat blog. Tapi saya kecewa sekali karena sinyal hotspot yang saya terima sangat lemah sehingga saya gagal melakukan koneksi. Ini berbeda sekali ketika saya menunggu pesawat di ruang tunggu bandara di Palembang. Sinyal hotspot sangat kuat dan saya bisa browsing sembari menantikan waktu keberangkatan.

Pukul 17.00 saya sudah berada di dalam pesawat yang akan membawa para penumpang ke Yogya. Perjalanan udara dari Palembang ke Yogya ini sangat lancar. Tidak ada halangan apapun. Apalagi cuaca sangat cerah. Dari dalam pesawat saya bisa melihat gumpalan-gumpalan awan putih di bawah.

Lima puluh menit kemudian pesawat sudah tiba di Bandara Adi Sutjipto Yogyakarta. Saudara-saudara saya beserta keponakan-keponakan saya sudah menunggu di ruang tunggu bandara tersebut. Ah… akhirnya saya berada di Yogya lagi! Sudah 7 tahun tidak mengunjungi Yogya. Sebelumnya saya telah beberapa kali datang ke Daerah Istimewa ini.

Senang sekali rasanya bisa bertemu dan berkumpul kembali bersama saudara-saudara dan keponakan-keponakan. Kami berbincang, bercanda, dan bernyanyi. Kami juga sempat melihat beberapa sudut daerah Yogyakarta. Banyak sekali perubahan yang terjadi dibandingkan 7 tahun yang lalu.

Minggu 27 Juli 2008 kami mengunjungi Pantai Parang Tritis atau yang lebih dikenal sebagai Paris. Pada awalnya saya bingung ketika keponakan saya mengajak saya ke Paris. Saya belum nyambung. Akhirnya keponakan saya menjelaskan bahwa Paris itu singkatan dari Parang Tritis. Macam-macam saja! Kalau di Palembang Paris berarti ‘parak sinilah’ (atau dalam bahasa Indonesia ‘dekat sinilah’). Di Pantai Parang Tritis ini saya bisa melihat ombak besar bergulung-gulung. Selama ini saya cuma bisa menyaksikan ombak Parang Tritis di televisi. Gundukan-gundukan pasir ada di sana-sini. Anak-anak, termasuk keponakan saya, bermain-main di pantai sehingga tubuhnya basah dan kotor karena dipenuhi pasir. Pantai Parang Tritis adalah salah satu objek wisata yang potensial. Tapi sayangnya… menurut saya tempat wisata ini belum dikelola dengan baik. Peran pemerintah daerah sangat diperlukan agar tempat wisata ini terlihat lebih indah dan rapi.

Di dalam bahasa cakapan kita sering mendengar orang mengucapkan kata suka alih-alih kata sering, seperti pada kalimat berikut.
1. Saya suka/sering lupa waktu kalau lagi asyik bekerja.
Pada kalimat itu, baik suka maupun sering, dapat digunakan bergantian karena dalam bahasa cakapan salah satu makna kata suka ialah 'sering'.
Dalam bahasa resmi, pemakaian kedua kata itu harus dibedakan dengan cermat sebab makna keduanya memang berbeda. Pada contoh berikut suka tidak dapat digantikan oleh sering karena sering berarti 'acapkali' atau 'kerapkali'.
2. a. Dia adalah teman dalam suka dan duka.
b. Saya suka akan tindakannya.
c. Ambillah kalau Anda suka.
d. Jarang sekali ada ibu yang tidak suka akan anaknya.
Pada contoh (2a) itu kata suka bermakna 'girang', 'riang', atau 'senang'; pada (2b) berarti 'senang'; pada (2c) berarti 'mau', 'sudi', atau 'setuju';pada (2d) berarti 'sayang'.

Kata elite berasal dari bahasa Latin /eligere/ yang berarti 'memilih' dalam bahasa Indonesia kata elite berarti 'orang-orang terbaik atau pilihan dalam suatu kelompok' atau 'kelompok kecil orang-orang terpandang atau berderajat tinggi (kaum bangsawan, cendekiawan, dsb.). Dalam bahasa latin huruf /e/ pada akhir kata mustinya diucapakan.

Oleh karena itu, kata elite harus diucapakan /elite/, bukan /elit/. Begitu juga dengan bonafide harus diucapkan /bonafide/, bukan /bonafid/ atau faksimile harus diucapkan /faksimile/, bukan /faksimil/, /feksimil/ atau /feksemail/.
